Ion Chromotography

Make: Metrohm

Model: 850 professional IC

Principle

Ion chromatography is a process in which ions and polar molecules are separated based on their charge. This can be done with most any type of charged molecule.

Sample preparation

In the case of liquid sample, take known amount of sample filter through 0.2µm; 47mm filter paper using suction pump.

In the case of solid samples, take known amount of sample and dissolved suitable acid/base then adjust the pH around 6.5 to 7.5 of the dissolved sample. Finally sample filter through 0.2µm; 47mm filter paper using suction pump.

Applications

  1. Determination of hexavalent chromium (Cr VI)

   ii. Speciation of chromium

  1. Anions

          Strengths

  • Good separation technique for major ions
  • Speciation studies
  • Metal analysis
  • Low sample quantity

          Limitations

  • Analysis time taken
  • Maintained cost is high
  • Maintained pH conditions
  • Pre sample preparations are needed
